The seasons have changed. Ill does fare the land. Prague Spring has faded away, we’ve lived through the long stormy summer of the 1990s, and now it seems winter knocks on our door. Prague, the Western promontory which anchors us all Eastern Europeans to Europe proper, to culture and skepticism, still shines. But it’s darkenss for the rest of us. We’ve sunk into demagogy and cinicism, from Poland to Bulgaria. We’ve let irresponsible men with no sense of history take over and drive our countries into the wall, as the cases of Hungary and Romania cleary illustrate. We walk without a compass.

It wasn’t always like this. This part of the world had, not long ago, a president like Václav Havel. He was without doubt the highwater mark for East-Central European politics, and, with such people as François Mitterrand, for European politics simpliciter.
