Becket was one of the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival highlights for me. Preceding the film was an interview with the one and only Peter O’Toole. He looked fantastic and was really funny. The showing was at The Egyptian Theater. TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz did a great interview (there are several clips on Youtube). The two powerhouse performers that make this movie are Peter O’Toole (Lawrence of Arabia, My Favorite Year) as King Henry II and Richard Burton (Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Cleopatra 1963) as Thomas Becket – the king’s best friend, confidant and trusted adviser. Drinking and wenching evolves into more serious matters as their relationship begins to change over time. I enjoyed the sumptuous medieval costumes and appreciated the fairly basic set.
