Day 38: Film #10 Hugo and Film #11 The Tree of Life

Since its filmic conception in the 1950s through the French Cahiers du Cinéma, auteurism has argued that certain artists are able to carry over stylistic, thematic, and philosophical ideas to each film they create. At the time, the idea was revolutionary because it individualized what had been conceived as a mechanical, systematic filmmaking process in Hollywood. The studio system worked against individual artistic vision to create a standard production that could be replicated again and again. But critics like Godard and Truffaut argued that even in this system, certain filmmakers managed to maintain a consistent vision whether they were working on a romantic comedy or a film noir (a term that the French invented). Thus, directors like Howard Hawks and John Ford were seen as unique and singular artists.
