Jules et Jim
is a 1962 French Film directed by Francois Truffaut based on Henri-Pierre Roché‘s 1953 semi-autobiographical novel about his relationship with writer Franz Hessel and his wife, Helen Grund. The film was starred by Jeanne Moreau, Oskar Werner and Henri Serre.
Truffaut came across the book in the mid-1950s whilst browsing through some secondhand books in Paris and later befriended the elderly Roché.
Paris, 1907. In the borough of Montparnasse, two students, one Austrian named Jules and one French, Jim, are linked to each other by a deep friendship, because they are joined by the equal artistic and literary tastes. The causal meeting with Caterina, a young girl in who they found the same smile of a statue which very impressed them, does not break their friendship, even if the woman while feeling close to both, marries Jules.
