In Defense of Dr. J Edgar Pritchard: Looking for Achievement in Poetry

My Kind of Fooling

Today I sat down to finish what should have been a reasonably simple assignment. In five to six pages double spaced, I was to select  a poem and describe its achievement. I found a poem and stared blankly at the page for a while. I didn’t know where to begin. In all my time studying English through high school  and college, I’ve never had to do anything like that before. Up until this point, I’ve had it banged into my head that how good a poem is doesn’t actually matter. The job of a reader (or, more precisely, a critic) is to figure how and what a poem means. Any discussion of achievement  is, as I’ve been taught, tangential. A trained “reader” should be able to pick up a piece of paper on the street and be able to find something of value. The most polemical example of this argument that…
