Here in America’s most heavily Irish Catholic congressional district, St. Patrick’s Day comes with a heavy dose of cramped, insular self-congratulatory nationalism, and green beer—neither of which is very attractive, particularly in large quantities.
So before all that starts flowing, here are The Chieftains, who have for 50 years now represented the more attractive side of Irish culture—humility, grace, a welcoming spirit…and (one suspects) real beer shared generously and repeatedly with a wide circle of friends. As a band without a true lead singer, The Chieftains long ago mastered the art of collaborating with and backing up other singers. Here they are with Ziggy Marley, covering his father Bob’s “Redemption Song”.
Won’t you help to sing, these songs of freedom?
