A Reflection On – Experimental Film

After reading a section from the book, Film Art An Introduction (David Bordwell. 2010) on experimental  film, I have gathered that what differentiates experimental film from conventional film is its form. Unlike mainstream films, experimental films challenges orthodox notions of what a movie can show and how it can show it. They normally possessed two characteristics, which is the abstract form and the associational form. The difference between the two forms is that one becomes subordinate to the rhetorical purposes of the film, while the other draws a pattern that the audience can associate with.

After watching the film, Ballet mecanique (Dir. Fernand Leger and Dudly Murphy, 1924), I was able to see why the film form was considered abstract. There was no narrative flow to the film but as an audience I was able to understand what the directors were trying to achieve through the visual and temporal rhythms…
