“There is no there, there.”
This is supposedly what Gertrude Stein said upon visiting Oakland, her former home, after time away from it. Some think she meant it literally–when she went back to visit, the place where she grew up was no longer there–but the quote has been used more as an elusive statement, meaning that maybe Oakland has no “hub,” no “center.”
I’m going to bastardize her quote for my own purposes today. I’m using it to talk about belonging, and clubs.
