I read Susan Sontag’s In Plato’s Cave again with the latest vision for my project in mind, and found the essay more relevant than I did before. In particular the frequent references to the ubiquity of images and to the fact that photographs strongly contribute to our perception of the world. See some excerpts below:

  • Just about everything has been photographed, or so it seems. […] [Photography] gives us the sense that we can hold the whole world in our heads, as an anthology of images.
  • Photographed images do not seem to be statements about the world so much as pieces of it, miniatures of reality that everyone can make or acquire
  • Like every mass form, photography is not practiced by most people as an art. It is mainly a social rite, a defense against anxiety, and a tool of power.
